Chapter 9

I WAS AWAKENED by a knock at the door. “Sir!!! There are people outside the castle gate to see you! Wake up!”

“Come in…” I groaned. But yeah, what a pleasant dream I’d been having. Geese... Lots of geese, and all mine. Okay, enough! What’s become of my dreams? Geese!?! But the more I thought about it, the more I was captivated by the thought of using geese for aerial transport. “Wait a minute,” I sat up and looked at the guard. “What kind of people? It’s six in the morning!”

“You’d better see for yourself...” he handed me a tablet that was broadcasting footage from our surveillance cameras. And yes, outside the castle was a throng of people. Adults, children, some toting luggage and sacks, others without. “I’m still unable to comprehend,” I said, conjuring a wave of invigorating energy for myself, and sending some to the guard, as well.

“Thanks,” he said with a little bow. “They’re teachers, Sir. They’re seeking employment.”

“And so what? They’re planning on moving right in on day one?” Seriously. What about a probationary period, paperwork? Incidentally, how about interviewing them first? It would seem that I’d failed to anticipate how screwed up the Empire’s educational system was.

“Ah, well. I guess they’re thinking about their children’s future,” I sighed as I got up and stretched. “For now let them in and tell them to wait. You can serve them some tea. I’ll be down soon.”

The guard rushed off and I quickly showered, had a bite to eat, poured myself a mug of aromatic tea, and then summoned Chernomor and Vika. She, too, had to be rudely awakened. She never got up this early because she usually worked late into the night. Chernomor, however, was already ready for action and sat down to have breakfast with me.

“What are we going to do?” he boomed taking a sip of tea and leaning back in his chair.

“We’ll have to provide them quarters!” I shrugged.

“Where, though? We have offworld migrants living amongst us.”

He was right. I’d totally forgotten about that.

“Well, we do have to resettle them. That shouldn’t be a problem.” Although, the way both Vika and Chernomor looked at me, I could tell they thought otherwise. “Okay, how many do we have out there?”

“A couple of hundred,” sighed Vika, “And we have no room for them in the villages, nor do we have the time to build new housing for them.”

“Our mages picked a fine time to take themselves out of action,” I sighed. “Okay, we’ll manage somehow. We have old villages, we can use them.”

“But the houses there are decrepit,” protested Vika, “I mean, compared to the new villages.”

“True, but anything would be an improvement over living in tents,” I said. “And soon, our mages will come back fresh and eager, ready to build us a couple of new villages.”

“So how much time do we have?” asked Chernomor, looking at his watch.

“No time, or twenty minutes,” I said, also looking at my watch, “Give or take a few.”
